Robot Needle-Fiddling LIVE
Friday, September 18, 2009Ah, to those in the Robot Nation who did not make Tony's fine spinnages last month at the Verdugo (see post below), shame, pure shame. To those who did make it (and there were more than a few including yours truly), the Record Robot spirit shone brightly within the crowded confines, and everyone was happy, happy, happy.
Happiness is the goal when you go out on a Saturday night. And if your destination is the Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park on any given third Saturday of the month, DJ St. James always does his best to help you arrive safely at your destination. Combine his delightfully informed choices of '70s AM nuggets, Latin funk, '80s one hitters and bachelor pad hipster jive with the Verdugo's fine array of cask brews, hop happy tap tippers and maybe even a mixed drink or two for the more refined among us, and you cannot help but feel... happiness.
This month it's my turn (returning as DJ Silver Claude), and I think I'm ready. I've been pillaging the archives mining a delicate balance of crowd pleasing grooves and "What the fuck is this?" headscratchers. Do Spanish language children's records go over well in a nightclub sandwiched between obscure '70s funk and a new Robert Pollard track? We'll find out.
